INTRODUCTION Since the announcement of its existence and publication in 1965, the Vinland Map claimed by some to be genuine and by some to be a forgery. It is claimed that the Vinland Map is a 15th century map depicting Viking exploration of North America centuries before Columbus. If genuine, the Vinland map could be considered a very important document of Western civilization; if proved to be a fake, it would ranl as one of the most clever forgeries in history. From a forensic point of view, the analysis of the age of the map and the analysis of the materials used in its drawing provide an excellent vehicle to introduce many forensic concepts.
